How to make a candle on the beachMore articles
This article assumes some knowledge of candle making. If you're a complete beginner, why not try one of our candle making kits first. They all come with a free "How to make candles" booklet.Make an indentation in the sand for your candle shape. You could use your hand, a cup, stone or a stick for example.
For best results use damp sand. Too dry and the sand will not keep the shape, especially when you pour the wax.
Set your wicks in your indentation.
Carefully pour in the melted wax and leave to harden.
Remove the candle when cooled and brush off excess sand.
The above is how to make a moulded candle in sand. It is removed from the sand and then burned as normal.
In my opinion an even easier and more attractive method is to create this candle in a glass jar as a container candle. Leave it in the jar to burn.
There are two ways to do this. Which one you choose depends upon how steady a hand you have and the size and type of jar you use.
The easiest way is to create a candle in the sand as mentioned at the start of this article. After removing it from the sand, put sand in to your jar and push the candle in to it. Decorate with shells or as required and you're done.
Or, pour the wax directly in to a sand indentation prepared in the jar.
Since you will not be able to keep the sand moist, it is best to create a candle with gradually sloping sides like a lake rather than a bath. That way as the candle burns down, the dry sand will not colapse in on top of it.
Making basic candles is not difficult, but getting perfect results takes time and practice. Never leave a lit candle unatended, below or close to other objects. Keep out of the reach of children and animals.
